UPDATE ON SPIRIT! This is Spirit a few minutes ago. He is doing great. He is alert, walking and eating. Dr Schoonover is thrilled with how he is acting this AM considering he has just had major surgery. We expect that he will be at OSU for about two weeks. He is a fighter. His Spirit is amazing. Below is an update on his surgery in case you missed it! We will post again tonight!
UPDATE on Spirit! Spirit is in his stall and resting.
The surgery took much longer than anticipated but was a complete success. Dr Schoonover
did a traditional fetlock arthrodesis (joint fusion procedure) with a locking stainless steel bone plate applied to the front of the joint. In order to make the joint straight he had to remove approximately 2cm of the end of his cannon bone. He now has a bone plate and 12 screws holding the bones of his fetlock together. This will hopefully allow the bone ends to grow together so there will be no more motion and thus no more pain. He is in a cast from the bottom of his knee incorporating his foot. He is on antibiotics and pain medications but he should be less painful than he was before surgery in a few days. At this point, we are optimistic for a full recovery and the plate should give him the stability he needs to walk again. Although this was unexpected, we have hope. I am personally grateful to all of you for your kindness and support of Spirit. I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support. We do need your financial support. We never budgeted for this additional surgery. Please help us if you can. God Bless!
